2015 AIA State Team Chess Championships

2015 AIA State Team Chess Championships

The AIA Chess season heated up in sunny Yuma as sixty four teams who have qualified after rigorous competition arrived on Friday,  November 6th for a two day tournament. The host for this final team tournament was Cibola High School.

There were two rounds on Day 1 and three rounds on Day 2. The tournament director was our very own Jeff Semmens and the Region V director was Joshua Norlien. Catalina Foothills from Tuscon has won this tournament for many years in the past and lots of teams geared up to score an upset and snag the title.

New charter schools have also joined the league this year; to name a few, Basis Flagstaff with a big contingent, Basis Chandler with a small but strong team and Basis Phoenix.

After five exciting rounds, Arizona College Prep won on tiebreaks winning the championship. Catalina Foothills second, Basis Flagstaff third, Basis Chandler fourth and Chandler Prep came in fifth. Congrats to all the players and winners.
